So I have a photography booking for you. Someone who’s not going to get you in for a meeting then try and change your style. Someone who thinks your photography is awesome, someone who you shared a sandwich with last Monday – I’m getting married! Tim popped the question over the weekend, have no idea of a date but when I do you better be free! Don’t tell anyone else cos I want to surprise Mel tomorrow! Hope you had a great wkend and chat soon!

I doubt a normal person would include the photographer on their list of ‘people to call when engaged’, but ever since I met her in advertising that’s just how Clare rolls with her genuine kindness.

Last I heard she traded her Beetle for Tim. Obviously a more reliable model.

This wedding was also featured by Polka Dot Bride while I was away in Japan.

Taxi drivers like to ask what I do for a living.
Which I find unfair, because I can’t really ask them the same question.

And once I tell them the answer, 9 out of 10, they will ask which compact camera they should buy.
(Which camera izza the best for travelling?)

I normally cringe. And then try to recall that stylish new camera I read about on Monocole / WIRED / FastCo.
But at the back of my mind, there’s always a voice yelling ‘the phone! just tell them to save the money, and use their beeping phone! ‘

Yes. In my humble opinion, under non-commercialised, candid, personal documentation circumstances, the smart phone is the best camera.

Best point being I can pretend to be texting while composing a street shot.

Since Japan last year, I began to use it more frequently on weekdays.

And save the big guns for actual work.

(So 2005, I know.)

Anyway, this is a very long and convoluted way of announcing my presence on Instagram.

(So 2008, I know.)

I don’t really use it as a ‘sharing’ medium per se, but more like a visual diary.

Not sure if you’ve seen Ocean’s Eleven.
(Yes, the George Clooney version. I’m not old enough to refer to the 1960 version. Yet.)

There’s this scene, towards the end, after they successfully pulled off the heist.
The eleven men stood in front of the Bellagio fountain.
Debussy’s Suite Bargamasque #3 playing in the background.
With a smirk on their faces, they leave the fountain. One by one.

That scene summarises how I feel whenever I finish a shoot at night.
Especially last Sunday night, leaving Ilana and Michael’s reception from the NGV.
It was 11.30pm on the Princes Bridge.
Families and tourists were returning from the Moomba festival, movies, gigs, drinks, celebrations.
Or whatever normal families and tourists do on a Sunday night.

And I was among these people on the tram.
Normal folks enjoying their day off.
Rightfully ignorant about my 12 hour day.
About what I saw. The friendships, the dancing, the laughters, tears. My tired feet.
Rightfully ignorant about me, humming Debussy in my head.

Call me crazy, but I consider this as one of the perks of the job.

Sometimes, Melbourne CBD makes it too easy to find colourful, interesting backdrops.
(This is me talking after spending a full weekend shooting in the outback.)
Of course, the shot is not complete without the wedding couple’s will to conquer the giant Melbourne bins.

As buggered as my legs(from the running) and bum(from the driving) feel, I am grateful.
